Healthy gums are an essential foundation to healthy teeth. Gum disease results in swollen and bleeding gums if left untreated may progress to bone loss around teeth and implants which ultimately result in the loss of the teeth and/or implants. Bad breath (oral halitosis), bleeding gums and pain when brushing/flossing are signs of poor gum health.
The clinicians at White Light Prosthodontics are skilled in ensuring your gums are healthy prior to any restorative rehabilitation and are maintained thereafter. Gum treatment involves the professional removal of plaque and calculus (hardened mineralized plaque also known as tartar) build up above and below the gum pockets. Sensitive teeth with exposed root surfaces may require treatment under local anaesthesia.
The initial debridement and disinfection visit may be the most uncomfortable due to the swollen gums and sensitive exposed root surfaces. Once the root surfaces of the teeth are clean and maintained with good home hygiene instructions, the subsequent follow up visits are more comfortable.
Moderate to severe gum disease may require a referral to a periodontist (gum specialist) for further management.
